GARDEN HOUSE SCHOOL
Our History
Garden House School was founded in 1950 by Margery de Brissac Bernard (1896-1994). Miss
de Brissac educated the children and grandchildren of diplomats and Prime Ministers including
Winston Churchill.
Following the end of the Second World War, Miss de Brissac taught ballet in London. Her
success as a ballet teacher combined with her style, personal discipline and moral stance
encouraged her to establish a school. Garden House School was born.
After twenty-five years at the helm, Miss de Brissac handed ownership to one of her parents Mrs
Jillian Oddy. Under Mrs Oddy’s governance as Principal, the School flourished with increasing
numbers of girls in Sloane Gardens and a boys’ school based in Pont Street. In 2004 the school
moved from the two sites into its current building in Turks Row. Boys and girls continued to be
taught separately up to the age of eleven, coming together for the co-curriculum, lunch, trips
and special events.
In the 1990s, Garden House opened a sister school in New York City, followed by two further
schools. Close links exist between the London and New York schools.
The School is very proud to be family run. In 2020, Mrs Oddy handed ownership to her children,
Christian Warland and Sophie Strafford, previously Head of the Boys’ School for fourteen years
and Registrar for twenty-two years respectively. Both attended the School as children.
Garden House School looks to and is excited by the future for our childen. We are grounded in
the present, taking forward the very best from our past. We stay in touch with our Alumni and
many return as teachers, parents or grandparents of our children.
