GARDEN HOUSE SCHOOL
The Curriculum
Garden House provides a broad and balanced curriculum with an emphasis on developing the
whole child.
Learning Dispositions: Children are taught to consider and evaluate themselves as learners
both inside and outside of the classroom through our five learning dispositions: independence,
perseverance and resilience, an ability to reflect, courage and curiosity. These habits of mind
are embedded across every area of life at Garden House and develop children as thoughtful
and effective learners.
Early Years: The Early Years consists of Kindergarten and Preparatory (Reception). The
Kindergarten is based in Sedding Street and enjoys all the benefits of the main school. All
children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage which offers an equivalently broad curriculum
with a focus on Literacy and Mathematics. The teaching is imaginative and creative, aiming to
instil a joy of learning in each child within a secure and nurturing environment. All pupils also
attend Forest School sessions in Battersea Park or Kensington Gardens.
English: The ability to communicate ideas and feelings clearly, effectively and with confidence
is a quality that our English curriculum is designed to foster. We encourage our pupils to share
and substantiate their views and opinions through spoken and written language. We nurture a
love of reading, realising its potential to transport children to different places, whilst positively
impacting on their ability to access all other areas of the curriculum. All pupils have dedicated
sessions in our newly refurbished libraries.
Mathematics: Our Mathematics teaching aims to provide children with the problem solving,
critical thinking and reasoning skills they can utilise in real life situations. Children build
strong foundations of mathematical processes and number fluency using a range of visual
representations and concrete resources. As they progress through the school, children deepen
their understanding of mathematical concepts and are encouraged to become independent,
inquisitive learners who actively seek out challenge.
Science: Through Science, children learn to think differently. We aim to promote their curiosity
and equip them with the courage and resilience to investigate ideas and theories, ask questions
and find ways to discover the impact and relevance of Science in everyday life. Through
practical, handson lessons, children discover that finding problems is just as important, and just
as fun, as solving them. The Five Types of Enquiry underpin our teaching, with children learning
how to observe, seek patterns, identify, classify, research and carry out comparative and fair
testing. Garden House children learn that mistakes are not to be feared and, instead, form a
vital part of their learning journey.
