GARDEN HOUSE SCHOOL
The Curriculum
Computing: Children develop the skills to become independent enquirers and producers of
solutions using a wide range of hardware and software. A focus on programming and coding
encourages them to approach tasks in a logical and systematic way, while developing key
problem-solving instincts.
Languages: French is taught from Kindergarten, allowing children to broaden their horizons
and open their minds to other cultures. Latin is introduced in MSII (Y4), with children also
given a ‘taster’ year in Spanish in Upper School II (Y6). The assimilation of languages provides
children with a challenging academic discipline and deepens their understanding of their own
language. We offer a broad range of language-based clubs, both for beginners and native
speakers.
History: History at Garden House is more than dates and facts; it is an exploration through
time, encouraging both a natural curiosity to question and developing the skills to find the
answers. Above all, we believe that the ability to develop enquiry and interpretation skills, and
reach balanced conclusions is paramount to becoming a successful historian.
Geography: Children are taught to investigate and question the world, through places both
near and far. They are encouraged to make relevant links between areas of knowledge, and
understand the demands of human patterns and processes on our physical environment.
RE & Ethics: Religious Education endeavours to contribute to the development of our pupils’
own beliefs and values, helping them to gain a broader knowledge and understanding of
religious practices. It seeks to actively promote the fundamental British values of mutual respect
and to celebrate those with different faiths and beliefs. Ethics aims to give individuals a system
of moral principles, and a love of critical thinking which provide a basis for good judgement
and decision making.
Life & Culture: Life & Culture brings together the personal, social, health education, emotional
literacy, social skills and spiritual development of our pupils. It encompasses British Values
and the statutory curriculum of Relationships and Health Education. Children are taught to be
mindful of their thoughts and feelings and to respect those of others. They learn to make sense
of the world around them, and to better understand their place within it.
Music: All children are musical. We provide ours with a wide range of opportunities to discover
this. We have six choirs, a string ensemble, woodwind ensemble and guitar group. We offer
one-to-one tuition on a wide range of instruments from the Harp to the Saxophone, and from
the Ukulele to the Electric Guitar. Over 80% of our children from Junior School (Y2) upwards
play an instrument.
