GARDEN HOUSE SCHOOL
The Curriculum
Sport: All our children enjoy a varied and busy programme of sport at Garden House, designed
to broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding in a range of activities. We want our pupils
to enjoy Physical Education, understanding the principles of teamwork and sportsmanship
and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. Our sports include: Hockey, Gymnastics,
Netball, Football, Cricket, Rugby, Athletics, Tennis, Running, Rounders and Swimming. All
pupils regularly participate in matches against local schools and take part in a wide range of
competitive fixtures, competitions and tournaments.
Fencing is a discipline, an art and a sport. All our children are fencing by the age of eight and
develop the technical skills, artistic attributes and logical elements of a fencer.
All children benefit from dancing and our pupils are taught ballet right from the start. Ballet
requires discipline and coordination, which helps promote both physical and mental wellbeing.
Children achieve a high standard of performance, enhanced deportment, and self-discipline,
further developing their confidence.
Art: Art and Design at Garden House gives pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge to
express and celebrate their ideas and individual creativity. It encompasses looking at the world
around us, and learning about different artists, techniques and cultures. While it is essentially
a practical subject, it also provides opportunities for reflection, and pupils acquire the ability to
make informed, critical responses to their own work and that of others.
Drama: Weekly Drama lessons support the personal development and emotional growth of
every child through varied and dynamic games, exercise and challenges. There is a strong
focus on Shakespeare from Junior School (Y2) upwards and this is designed to cultivate and
encourage a lifelong love of language and literature. The academic year is packed with events
and performances, enhancing a child’s public-speaking skills and their ability to communicate
to a wider audience.
Learning Enrichment and Development: Our well-resourced Learning Support team works
closely with parents and teachers to help children progress and develop confidence in order
to become independent and resilient learners. This is achieved through a continuous cycle
of observation and evaluation, and by making reasonable adjustments within the classroom
to provide for individual needs. Children are supported in the classroom, in groups and on an
individual basis where appropriate.
