Summary of inspection findings
1. Garden House School is well led and managed. The three headteachers work together highly
effectively in prioritising pupils’ wellbeing and share a common focus for the care and welfare of
each individual. Leaders are clear and ambitious in evaluating the school’s performance and
planning for its future development.
2. The school’s provision of education and teaching is equal in quality for both genders, and leaders at
the school regularly review the risk of intended and unintended consequences of the gender
separation policy. In this respect, teaching at the school does not discriminate and provides effective
support to meet the differing needs of male and female pupils in the school.
3. The proprietors and leaders work closely together to create a stimulating and supportive
environment in which pupils are motivated and happy. Proprietors have close oversight, ensuring
that leaders fulfil their responsibilities and Standards are met.
4. The broad and balanced curriculum provides a wide-ranging education that prepares pupils well for
the future. Staff teach well-planned and engaging lessons. Pupils make good progress across a wide
range of subjects and develop particularly advanced linguistic skills. Consequently, they are
successful in gaining places at selective schools in London and further afield.
5. Information and communication technology is taught well as a discrete subject but is not always
used as effectively as possible in most subjects to advance learning. This inhibits the development of
some learning skills, such as research and analysis.
6. The needs of individual pupils are central to the planning and delivery of the curriculum. The support
offered to those pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is highly
effective in ensuring they make good progress from their starting points.
7. Leaders have designed an extensive extra-curricular programme that enriches pupils’ education and
develops their skills in a wide range of areas.
8. The school’s ‘life and culture’ personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education programme
successfully promotes pupils’ physical, emotional and mental health. It develops pupils’
understanding about the need for mutual respect and enables them to consistently demonstrate the
school’s values of kindness and tolerance.
9. Standards of behaviour are consistently high. This is because staff set clear expectations, listen
carefully to pupils’ views and deal with any misbehaviour quickly and effectively.
10. Premises and buildings are maintained to a high standard. Effective use is made of external facilities
for outdoor learning and sport. The arrangements for health and safety, fire safety, supervision and
first aid are effective.
11. Leaders have planned an effective programme of trips and visits to enrich and extend the curriculum
and enable pupils to develop an understanding of Britian’s culturally diverse society. Successful use
is made of the school’s central London location to create links with places of worship, local charities
and democratic institutions. This contributes to the development of pupils’ understanding of social
responsibility.
